Phasing out of Plex to Reduced Use

Why is this Happening?

For multiple reasons. Primarily, it is becoming harder and harder to “ethically” source media. Over half of the media on the Plex server at this point could be considered “pirated.” Technically, all of it is pirated since the copy on the Plex server was downloaded from Pirate sources, but much of it is also owned physically which removes the moral issue of it.

At first, I was willing to turn a blind eye to it. Media piracy is generally not considered theft within the tech community since “theft requires taking something from someone else. When we download a copy, we’re not taking a copy away from anyone else, so it’s not theft.” Technically, this logic is sound. The issue, however, is that the media is not what’s being stolen, it’s the payment for the media that’s being stolen. Regardless of whether you were going to buy it anyway or not, regardless of who actually gets that money (normally some conglomerate rather than the original creator), technically, it’s still theft.

Would anyone suffer from this minimal piracy? No, probably not. Would there ever be consequences? Undoubtedly, no. However, Biblically I believe this makes sense.

“One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.” (Luke 16:10)

“To do righteousness and justice
is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.” (Proverbs 21:3)

“So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” (James 4:17)

That said, no judgment on any other members of the community, nor friends or family. This is a personal choice in my walk in Christ.

What will go away, and when?

The Plex server itself will remain up, though many pieces of content will be phased out, especially that which cannot be easily accessed or purchased in the US. If there is content you particularly enjoy and watch often that falls in that category, please reach out to me_plex_be_important_mate@lucas-elliott.com
